A Nigerian man has filed a lawsuit against his ex-girlfriend to force her to uphold a shared rent payment arrangement for the home she lived in for years.
He claims the rent is N300,000 a year, and they agreed that he would pay N200k and she would pay N100k.
However, she stopped paying because she had discreetly found a house of her own.
The aggrieved man’s case was heard in a civil lawsuit brought before Justice Olusola Williams of Judging Matters with the assistance of anchor and attorney Ebuka Obi-Uchendu.
According to the complainant, his wife paid her share of the rent for the years 2019–2020 but failed to do so for 2020–2021, claiming that she had lost her work. He stated that after conducting research, he learned that she was still employed and now had her own apartment.
He required that she first pay the N100k remaining for the 2020–2021 season before she could leave him after breaking up with him and declaring her want to park out. She claimed, however, that they never entered into an arrangement and that she was merely helping him with the rent payment.
She claimed that he stopped doing the things he used to do to motivate her, which is why she chose to stop paying the rent and quit their relationship. She asserted that no such contract was struck, pointing out that he had requested her to live in his house for free. The man claimed that they had a verbal agreement.
He replied that he had never specifically instructed her to live free of rent, but she questioned his decision to do so given that she was his fiancée. Williams, however, ruled that the defendant must pay the N100k because the advantage to which she felt entitled as his fiancée was revoked by her decision to jilt him while continuing to reside in his home.
