The Ghanaian gospel music community is in mourning following the passing of iconic singer Maame Tiwaa, a foundational voice of the legendary Yaw Sarpong & Asomafo band.

Born Mary Tiwaa, the celebrated vocalist died in the early hours of Sunday, December 7, 2025, after more than three decades of ministering through song and touching millions with her spiritually uplifting performances.

Maame Tiwaa was best known for her lead vocals on some of Asomafo’s most timeless hits, including “Wo Haw Ne Sen?”, “Awurade Ka Me Ho”, “Yen Fa Oye Nkoaa”, and “Mensuro”. Her powerful and emotive delivery became a defining element of the group’s sound, making their music a staple in churches and Christian homes across Ghana and beyond.

Beyond her work with the band, she was also revered for her soul-stirring solo ministrations during live programs, often described by fans and colleagues as profoundly anointed.

Her death marks the end of an era for one of Ghana’s most influential gospel collectives and leaves a significant legacy in the nation’s contemporary gospel music landscape. Tributes have begun pouring in from fellow musicians, church leaders, and a generation of listeners raised on her music.
